What is Nitronox?

Nitrous oxide (N2O/O2) is an inorganic gas commonly known as ‘laughing gas’. Despite early knowledge of its analgesic and anesthetic properties it was not introduced into mainstream medical/dental practice until the late 1800s. Nitrous oxide provides a safe, simple, fast acting alternative for pain management or conscious sedation.

Nitronox Plus offers the clinician the ability to adjust the percentage of nitrous oxide from 0-70% to provide the best possible outcome.

During the procedure, patients experience reduction in pain and anxiety due to the analgesic and anxiolytic properties of nitrous oxide. After the procedure, the effects on the patient wear off within minutes.

Mechanism of action: nitrous oxide is predominately a NMDA-receptor antagonist, with little or no effect at GABA_A receptors. It is also known to have stimulatory effects on dopamine, α_1- and α₂-adrenergic and opioid receptors.

How does Nitrous Oxide Work?

Nitrous oxide and oxygen provides minimal sedation that allows the patient to remain alert and awake throughout the procedures but helps to manage pain and/or anxiety. Some patients describe the feeling as floating while others feel like they are sinking into the chair.
