What are Glucagon-like peptide-1’s (GLP-1)
Semaglutide
Semaglutide is a peptide that belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists or better known as GLP-1 RAs. It mimics the GLP-1 hormone which is released in the gut as a response to eating.
One of the roles of GLPs is to prompt the body to produce more insulin which is responsible for reducing blood sugar. This medication has been used for more than 10 years to treat type 2 diabetes.
GLP1s in higher amounts also act on portions of the brain that suppress appetite and signal satiety (feeling full). GLP-1s also slows the rate at which your stomach empties which leads to an increase in the feeling of fullness. When used in conjunction with diet and exercise, it can lead to significant weight loss which in turn reduces the incidence of diabetes, hypertension and reduces the risk of cancer.
It is important to use compounded semaglutide under the supervision of a healthcare professional. The benefits and risks of this medication should be carefully weighed on an individual basis. For lasting weight loss results, it is recommended to adopt a holistic approach that includes both medication and lifestyle changes.
Tirzepatide
Tirzepatide is very similar to Semaglutide. It belongs to the same class of medications (GLP-1 RAs) and is used for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes mellitus as well as weight loss. This drug also activates glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) as well as GLP1.
Compounded Semaglutide
The major advantage of semaglutide is its convenience. Semaglutide is available for both oral and subcutaneous routes. Compounded semaglutide is a form of the diabetes medication semaglutide that is custom-prepared by our compounding pharmacy(s).. This service has become especially important due to frequent shortages of GLP-1 medications, including well-known brands like Wegovy®, Ozempic®, and Rybelsus®. Such shortages are often caused by manufacturing delays, rising demand and disruptions in the supply chain, leaving many patients without essential treatment. Compounded semaglutide offers a reliable alternative when these name-brand medications are not available.
Tirzepatide cannot be compounded into an oral formulation and therefore is available for subcutaneous injection only.
Weight loss with GLP-1s:
The weight loss process with semaglutide usually starts with a lower dose and then increases as needed. Each person’s experience is unique. Some people will notice immediate changes in appetite and begin to lose weight more quickly than others. One person may need a different dose to achieve the same results.
Most people will start to see weight loss within a few weeks to months and will see continuous weight loss from that point. While semaglutide gives you control of your appetite, you may still need to change your behaviors and relationship with food to achieve lasting results.
How long do the results last?
Semaglutide and Tirzepatide results can last a lifetime, but they require maintenance. Patients who achieve lasting results combine semaglutide with a support program that prepares them to lead a healthier lifestyle. Tapering semaglutide has been demonstrated to help keep weight off.
Potential Side effects:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Bloating
- Light-headedness
